I moved to Baton Rouge not long after competing in the Miss Louisiana and not long before the devastating Katrina hit. I was finally venturing out on my own. I was actually going to be known as Laurie Payne. I would have a name all of my own. My dad came to visit one weekend and if you know me that well, you know my love for country music. I Want To Be A Stephanie

Last week, July 22, 2019 an amazing lady left this earth. I was shocked. I just couldn't wrap my mind around what had happened so I decided to dig a little deeper and I'm so glad I did. Stephanie Payne had devoted the last several years of her life as a grief counselor after the passing of her daughter, Savannah. From what I found, she impacted and helped thousands of people over the past years. Her words. Her hurt. Her purpose. Her heart. Her life. She didn't sink but she swam and never stopped. Are You Seriously?

My favorite conversations typically take place in the car. Where there is no technology. There are no distractions for the most part. It's actual dialogue. I talk and someone else listens or vice versa. The other day my son and I sparked up a conversation that led to him asking me this question: "Are you seriously comparing yourself to her?" I don't know how we got into the details of the conversation. I didn't think I was comparing myself. I was actually bragging on this person. But my son heard something else. How often do we compare ourselves? On social media... We compare our looks... We compare our homes... We compare our marriages... We compare our kids... We compare our vehicles... We compare our talent... But I want to take it a little deeper... How often do we compare ourselves to a younger version of us? I will see pictures and ask myself what happened to that girl? What happened to her fire? ...
