You Only Get One Shot

As I was preparing for a speech earlier this week, I found the lyrics to an old song, "Lose Yourself" by Eminem.  Some of the lyrics are as follows:  Look, if you had one shot, or one opportunity to seize everything you ever wanted.  one moment.  would you capture it or just let it slip...you better lose yourself in the music, the moment, you own it, you better never let it go.  You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow.  This opportunity comes once in a lifetime.  The song ends with this profound statement...you can do anything you set your mind to.

This is a talented young man whether you like him or not, you can't argue the fact that he's got talent.  If you had one shot at your dream...would you capture it or let it just slip by.  Though the last statement he made, you can do anything you set your mind to is true, another line jumped out at me.  Would you capture it or just let it slip.  That one line in the song made me think about life in general.  We take snapshots of memories we want to cherish.  We "capture" the "moments" in our lives because we know down the road...that's just what they will be.  Memories.  Moments that we experienced.  Do we actually ever just "capture" moments in life.  Do we really realize that every minute of our life will soon be a distant memory.  We live in such a fast pace world, we sometimes let moments slip.  We push them aside to check off the next item on our list of things to do.  Savor the moments in life that you will look back on and smile.  Enjoy the time with your family.  Take time for friends.  Listen to the older generation when they speak wisdom.

We get one shot.  We don't get mulligans.  We don't get time-outs. We don't get replays.  We don't get do-overs.  We don't come back in another life to try and make our life better.  It happens once.  Life.  What is it that you want from it?  Will you let it slip by or will you capture the moment?
