Shake It Like A Salt Shaker

Have you ever had pepper blown in your eyes? Well, if you have, then you know the immediate burning sensation... The inability to open your eyes or stop tears from pouring down your face.  Many, many years ago, my dear brother Beck thought  this would be humorous for some odd reason. Before I had time to realize what he was doing, he was laughing uncontrollably at himself as I was screaming.  If you know Beck, you can imagine how tickled he was at the moment. He was laughing as he blew the pepper in my face. Oh the joys of being the baby sister! I do have to admit, I believe I was laughing through the tears because my brother was crying tears from laughing so hard... at himself!

I was reminded of this story after hearing a song that says we are to be salt and light to the world. What does it mean to be salt and light? I understand light overcomes darkness but exactly what does the salt do? Well for one, it adds flavor. With just a pinch of salt, food is better but if you add too much, it ruins the taste.

So if we are to be salt and light, we are to make things better for all we come across.  We don't need to add too much "salt" or we may leave bitterness.  I like to think of salt as glitter.  We all know glitter makes everything it touches sparkle.  If you've ever used glitter, then you know it literally gets on everything. It sticks to your hands, your face, your clothes... And who knows where else. It's extremely hard (maybe next to impossible) to keep the glitter off of you. If the light hits the glitter just right, it sparkles.  You may not have known the glitter was even there until the light hits it and it's revealed.

So instead of blowing pepper in someones eyes, perhaps we could shake a little "salt" on them.  Leaving a trace of "glitter" over them so that when the light hits them just right, they shine.

Do you find yourself blowing pepper in someones eyes or do you shake a little salt over their life...leaving a sparkle in their eyes?

Do you make them bitter or better?

Today, let's do what we are called to do...be salt and light. So shake it like a salt shaker... Leave traces of glitter everywhere you go so God's light can shine!
