Plum and Jackson

So much of who we are is a product of how we were raised.  I see this...and I believe this...

I was at a red light in Monroe, LA at the corner of Plum and Jackson Street.  I saw four young men...one could possibly pass as 13 years old.  His shorts were nearly to his knees.  And I'm not referring to the length.  He was holding them by the waist so they wouldn't fall to his ankles.  Smoking a cigarette.  Headphones on.  Walking down the road at 10 a.m.  More than likely, this child doesn't know any different.  Perhaps he thinks it's "normal" to wear shorts around your knees rather than your waist.  He could possibly believe it's "normal" for a young child to smoke.  He has his entire life ahead of him but what will he do with it?  Who will step in and show him a different life?  A life full of promises.  This little boy was a good looking child.  He looked like an athlete.  Has anyone spoken life into him or are his surroundings telling him this is his life.  This is "normal".  So instead of this child growing up to reach his potential, he grows up to teach his children what his "normal" is and he never fully lives.

He would be a product of his upbringing.  Some say that we always have a way out and to a certain extent, I believe that but has this young boy had anyone step in to show him a way out?  Has anyone gone out of their comfort zone to reach out to him?  Does anyone believe in him?

Just a very short glimpse of this young boy opened my eyes to what we all should be doing to those we cross paths with daily.  Speak life!  Encourage others! Help them to reach their full potential.  Take their hand and walk with them to a better life.  You may be the only person to ever truly show them that life doesn't have to be what you are taught or what you think is normal.

Be someone's life line today.  Help them "become a better you."
